Process of Becoming a Member

Whether you are joining with years of experience or are a new recruit the initial steps are the same. Depending on when you apply, applicants will hear from us immediately and can expect the process can take up to 2 months.

  • Complete Initial Application

    Our short form will be review by our recruitment and membership committee and someone will connect you about options and opportunities.

  • Background Check

    Applicants must pass a state and federal background check.

  • Meet & Greet

    Typically every 3rd Tuesday of the month our membership committee meets with our perspective applicants.

  • Physical

    Applicants must pass a physical set up by the department, no charge to the applicant.

  • Becoming a Member

    Once all steps are completed an applicant will be approved and accepted into our department as a probationary member.

First Steps as a New Member

After you are accepted by the membership committee you will be:

  • Welcomed in at our monthly department meeting, introduced to all of our officers, given gear, and connected with our probie training committee to set up a training schedule.
  • Initial training
  • If you are joining as a recruit with no prior experience you will begin our in-house training typically given in the months of July and January and begin your firefighter 1 course given at the Suffolk County Fire Academy or for EMS personnel beginning your EMT or Paramedic course.
  • During or after your course requirements probationary recruits are expected to participate in department training, work details, special events, and most importantly respond to any alarms when available.
