Recruits go through an initial probationary period of at least 2 years that includes an in house training course and training at the Suffolk County Fire Academy where Firefighter 1 certification is gained.

NPFD Transfer Program

With the knowledge that members of the community with prior or current firefighting experience move into our district; the NPFD has implemented a firefighter transfer program. We welcome certified volunteers to current career and FDNY firefighters. We fit you right into our family as if you've been here for years, with little to no probation. We're not in the business of losing members and so we'll work with you to become acquainted with our department making it an easy transition.

Explorer

Our firefighter explorer program is the backbone of our fire department. Starting at ages 14 young members of the community can join our department to learn every facet of the fire service.

Starting at age 16, with a minimum requirement of 6 months in the program, an explorer can ride to fire alarms on our rigs.

At age 17 explorers can join our ranks as a full fledged firefighter and begin their firefighter 1 certification.

It is of utmost importance to keep explorer members flourishing in our department. Over time they have become a steady stream of local volunteers. Nearly all of our current members and officers have grown up through the explorer ranks.
